When you learn a Latin NOUN you will learn two Latin words:

The NOMINATIVE SINGULAR and the GENITIVE SINGULAR.

Put those two words on the front of your card.

On the back of your card, put the English translation(s), the part of speech (noun), declension (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th), and the gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter.)

Asking “HOW DO YOU KNOW?” is key to learning success.

Asking “HOW DO YOU KNOW?” is key to learning success.

Using this flashcard may sound like this...

What Part of Speech is this? Noun.

HOW DO YOU KNOW? A new student might respond..." I know it is a noun because I see two words and I know that when I learn a new noun, I learn two words."    Or a more experienced student might respond...  "I recognize the noun endings"

What declension is it in? First declension.

HOW DO YOU KNOW? I know that -a and -ae are  first declension endings.

What gender is this noun? Feminine.

HOW DO YOU KNOW? First declension words are usually feminine

What is the English translation? Earth, land.

Now you could easily ask for the English translation first and then ask the other questions.  I do love that you can know an awful lot about a word without knowing the actual translation.

Asking “HOW DO YOU KNOW?” is key to learning success. Knowing all this information helps so much when they are ready to translate and parse.

Kick it up another notch:  Include derivatives.  If you included derivatives on the back you could also ask...

DO YOU KNOW ANY ENGLISH DERIVATIVES?  (example: territory)

Or possibly, if they don't know the English translation you could offer the derivative as a clue to help them remember the meaning/translation.
